Runway is most useful as a shot-generation and transformation layer, not as a complete replacement for a camera, a phone editor, or a full timeline application. Its current web product combines video generation, image generation, edits to existing footage, and performance-driven character animation. The important buying question is narrower than "Can it make video?" It is whether one of those operations solves a repeated production problem at a credit cost and review burden the project can support.

This assessment was checked against Runway's public documentation on July 17, 2026. It is not a hands-on review. HUMAI did not generate clips, measure rendering time, compare visual quality, contact support, or use Runway on a client project. Any creative team considering it should run the retained-artifact trial described below with material it owns.

What Runway is in 2026

Runway is a web-based creative platform with several model families rather than one all-purpose "Runway ML" model. Its current product map points users to generation models, editing systems, character tools, Apps, and an API. The model picker matters because input type, output length, resolution, and credit rate change with the selected model.

Four current routes cover many practical decisions:

These routes do not promise the same type of control. With Gen-4.5 text-to-video, the prompt defines both appearance and motion. With image-to-video, the source image already fixes much of the composition, so the prompt should concentrate on motion, camera behavior, and changes over time. Gen-4 Image References is a separate preparation step when visual continuity depends on a person, object, or location. Act-Two requires a usable driving performance, and its gesture control is available when the character input is an image, not a character video.

A model name is not a quality guarantee. A completed generation can still be unsuitable for a cut, and Runway says completed outputs consume credits even when the user dislikes the result. Failed generations are supposed to return credits automatically under its credit refund policy. That makes shot acceptance, not raw generation count, the useful internal measure.

When a phone or regular editor is enough

Runway adds the most value when the source footage does not exist or needs a generative change. It is a poor first stop for a task that is already a conventional edit.

A phone editor may be sufficient for trimming a recorded clip, arranging a few shots, adding captions, adjusting volume, placing a logo, or exporting a social post. A desktop editor is the safer home for a long timeline, multicamera synchronization, exact audio work, color management, versioned client notes, broadcast deliverables, or a project assembled from many source files.

Runway itself recommends a local editor for larger projects because its legacy video editor is no longer actively maintained. Its export resolution guide also warns that choosing a 4K project export does not turn low-resolution media into true 4K source. A clean division of labor is often:

  1. write the shot brief and acceptance criteria outside the generator;
  2. use Runway only for the missing, transformed, or performance-driven shot;
  3. download accepted artifacts with their source information;
  4. assemble, mix, caption, color, and deliver in the editor already used by the production.

That boundary prevents a generative subscription from absorbing work the existing toolchain already handles. It also makes cancellation less disruptive because the accepted media and edit decisions remain in the production archive.

Plans and credits as of July 17, 2026

Runway's public pricing page displayed the following U.S. dollar prices when checked. Monthly billing showed Standard at $15 per month, Pro at $35, and Max at $95. Annual billing displayed monthly equivalents of $12, $28, and $76, respectively, with the annual amount billed as a yearly commitment. Tax, region, team size, and a later price change can alter the checkout.

The operational details matter as much as the headline allowance. Runway's credit documentation says editors in one workspace draw from a shared pool. Purchased credits have no expiration, while Standard and Pro plan credits do not carry forward. Extra credits are sold in amounts starting at 1,000 on eligible paid plans. A team should therefore budget at workspace level, not multiply the plan allowance by the number of editors.

Runway began phasing out the former Unlimited offer when it introduced Max on June 1, 2026. Existing Unlimited subscribers can keep that plan through August 31. On September 1, monthly subscribers move automatically to Max at the same $95 monthly price unless they cancel. Annual subscribers get a different choice in August: migrate to Max with a credit bonus or request a refund for the remaining months. The practical change is documented in Runway's Unlimited to Max notice: Max is credit-based and allows one month of rollover, while Unlimited's Explore Mode used a relaxed, queued generation system. An old review describing Unlimited as a current no-credit route is no longer a reliable buying guide.

Credit math for a real shot list

Gen-4.5 costs 12 credits per second in the current web documentation. A five-second candidate therefore costs 60 credits. If every credit went only to that model, Standard could fund 10 such candidates with 25 credits left, Pro could fund 37 with 30 left, and Max could fund 158 with 20 left. Those counts are capacity arithmetic, not estimates of usable footage.

Here is a larger illustrative trial. It is deliberately labeled as arithmetic, not as a forecast:

  • 10 Gen-4 Image reference frames at 1080p, at 8 credits each: 80 credits;
  • 8 shot concepts, with 2 five-second Gen-4.5 candidates per concept: 8 x 2 x 5 x 12 = 960 credits;
  • illustrative total before upscaling, extensions, or other tools: 1,040 credits.

On included plan credits alone, that exercise exceeds Standard by 415 credits. It fits inside Pro with 1,210 credits remaining. The comparison does not imply that two candidates are enough, that any candidate will pass review, or that every project needs ten reference frames. Its purpose is to reveal the budget before a team starts clicking Generate.

The lowest subscription price is not automatically the lowest project cost. A small allowance can interrupt a trial before the difficult shots are tested, while a large allowance can encourage generations that have no written purpose. Start with the shot list, separate must-have shots from experiments, and assign a ceiling to each. If one shot reaches its ceiling without an acceptable result, stop and change the method rather than hiding the overrun inside the rest of the monthly pool.

Teams also need one person to own the ledger. A shared workspace can make a credit balance disappear through unrelated exploration, even when each editor thinks a different project owns the allowance. Record opening credits, charges by shot, returned credits, purchased credits, and closing balance. That simple record makes a renewal decision much more informative than the account's generation history alone.

Runway publishes separate detail pages for Standard and Max. Check them and the live model selector before purchase. New models and third-party models can use different units, and an accepted clip may still require an upscale or a new aspect ratio.

Output resolution and export are separate decisions

Resolution depends on the route. The current Gen-4.5 and Act-Two documentation describes 720p output, while the Aleph 2.0 product page documents edits of clips up to 30 seconds at 1080p. Runway's 4K guidance says eligible generated video can be upscaled after generation. Upscaling is a separate processing step, not evidence that every model generates natively at 4K. Aspect ratios and availability also vary by model, as summarized in the resolution and aspect-ratio guide.

Any generation can be downloaded, but project export formats depend on the plan and editing surface. Runway's download and export guide says Basic and Standard video projects export as H.264 MP4, while higher tiers add options such as PNG sequences and ProRes 4444. Before committing to a production, export one accepted test shot in the exact path planned for delivery. Confirm dimensions, frame rate, codec, alpha behavior if relevant, color handling, and whether the next editor reads it correctly.

A retained-artifact trial that can answer the buying question

A useful trial is small, repeatable, and auditable. Choose six to eight shots that resemble the planned work. Include one easy motion, one difficult interaction, one continuity-sensitive subject, one shot with text or a logo if the project requires it, and one edit of real footage if Aleph is under consideration. Use only material the team owns or is authorized to process.

For every attempt, retain:

  • the shot brief and a short list of pass or fail conditions;
  • the exact prompt, input files, references, model, duration, aspect ratio, and settings;
  • the downloaded output, not only a link inside the account;
  • credits charged and any automatic refund for a failed generation;
  • the reviewer decision and a concrete rejection reason;
  • the final export after it has passed through the intended phone or desktop editor.

Do not score "quality" as one vague number. Count accepted shots, completed but rejected generations, correction tasks, and credits per accepted second. Note failure categories such as identity drift, unwanted camera movement, unreadable text, changed product geometry, temporal discontinuity, or a mismatch with the brief. Record review time separately from generation time.

Run a conventional baseline for the same deliverable. For example, assemble available phone footage, licensed stock, still-image motion, or a simple local effect without Runway. The subscription has earned a place only if the generative route solves a defined gap at an acceptable cost, rights profile, and correction burden. If the baseline already passes, no AI video plan is required for that job.

Privacy, ownership, and commercial work

Runway's Privacy Policy says the service collects user content such as prompts, images, music, video, audio, and associated metadata. It describes uses that include operating and improving services, research, analytics, and developing new products and services. The general retention statement is purpose-based rather than one fixed deletion interval for every upload.

The company's security overview says uploaded assets are private by default and cites SOC 2 Type II compliance. Default private access should not be confused with a promise that content is excluded from model improvement. The standard Terms of Use grant Runway broad permission to process Inputs and Outputs, including for training and improving its models. A confidential production should obtain the account-specific enterprise terms, security materials, retention controls, and data-processing commitments it needs before upload.

Runway does not claim ownership of a user's Inputs or Outputs, and the standard terms do not restrict commercial use for a user who complies with them. That is not copyright clearance. The uploader must have rights to the input, outputs may not be unique, and a generated result can still create trademark, publicity, contractual, or platform-policy risk. Keep licenses and consent records with the prompt and output archive. Review Runway's current usage policy for prohibited content and uses.

The web app and API are different products

A Runway web subscription does not fund an automated integration. App credits and API credits are separate and cannot be transferred. The developer pricing guide values API credits at $0.01 each, while the setup guide describes credit purchase and organization-scoped keys. The API has its own model catalog, and some entries are third-party models available through Runway rather than Runway models.

Automation also introduces limits and maintenance work that do not appear in a manual browser trial. Runway publishes organization and model-specific concurrency and daily limits in its API usage tiers. An end-user product using the API must follow the Terms requirement for "Powered by Runway" attribution and maintain suitable terms for its own users. API keys should be treated as deployable credentials: removing a team member does not by itself disable a key that person created, so key revocation needs its own offboarding step.

Test the web app when a person will create and review occasional shots. Test the API separately when software must submit jobs, track task states, enforce spend controls, store provenance, and handle throttling. A successful web prompt is evidence for a creative direction, not proof that the automated production system is ready.

The decision rule

Runway fits a workflow when a recurring shot requires generation, targeted transformation, reference-guided imagery, or performance transfer, and the team can review every output. It is harder to justify when the work is mainly trimming and assembly, exact long-form editing, sensitive unreleased material under standard consumer terms, or a one-off experiment with no defined acceptance test.

Choose the model from the input and output boundary first. Price the actual shot list second. Then run the retained-artifact trial and calculate credits per accepted second, not credits per attempt. Keep the final assembly in the production tool that already handles sound, captions, color, versions, and delivery. That sequence turns a broad AI video subscription into a specific production decision.
